How Calm uses AI as part of our Editorial process

Like much of the rest of the world, the Calm Editorial Team is learning how best to use AI to support and streamline our processes so we can deliver more content to more people.

The only non-negotiable? AI is never used at the expense of the quality of our content or the integrity of the Calm brand. Here’s what that means.

How do we use AI?

We use a custom artificial intelligence (AI) tool to support the earliest stages of content creation — specifically, to help generate initial content briefs and the earliest drafts of articles.

Interesting fact: Our custom AI tool is affectionately known as Pete to our team. We think of Pete as our digital assistant who helps make suggestions and offer analyses from time to time. However, we have to monitor Pete closely, as they have a habit of not doing what they’re told and going on some wild tangents.

How much are humans involved in the process?

A lot! As many people know, asking AI to write an article that you then publish is never going to be high quality and not always factually correct. Which is why our (human) editorial team is always in charge, steering the AI “ship” to make sure it continues to be a tool that benefits us and our readers.

Here’s how:

  • Our team pitches, brainstorms, and researches every topic we cover. Our own experiences, challenges, and questions are at the core of the Calm blog.

  • Every article is thoroughly written, edited, and fact-checked by at least three members of our editorial staff. By the time of publishing, up to 95% of any original AI content has been changed.

  • Calm’s Chief Clinical Officer, Dr. Chris Mosunic, reviews and edits each piece of content to ensure every article meets the highest standards for clinical and psychological integrity.

Why do we use AI?

By using AI to streamline a few early steps in our writing process, we’re able to expand our content library more efficiently. Essentially, it allows us to better support our readers with timely, accurate, and thoughtful guidance.

Did AI write this?

Nope. Not one bit. Pinky promise!
