Stay hydrated!

Tip # 6 for the holiday season: Stay hydrated!

Over the holiday season, it’s not uncommon for many people to drink more alcohol and coffee, both of which are dehydrating. A handy hydration practice is to match every cup of coffee or glass of wine with at least one cup of water. It can also be helpful to pause and ask yourself why you’re reaching for another beer or cup of coffee, to pause to see if this is really what you want (“Yes, the bright citrusy notes of this pinot grigio are exactly what I’m after right now”) or if there are other physical or emotional needs that you might be avoiding (“Actually, instead of a coffee, I really want a quick cat nap”). This will help you connect more deeply with yourself and build on your mindfulness practice, while also keeping your brain and body hydrated.

Here’s how the Calm team stays hydrated:

Christi-an: I fill up two 1L mason jars in the morning and drink them throughout the day. It really helps me to see and track how much water I am drinking.

Jade: I adore tea, and it’s become a ritual of sorts for me over the years. I enjoy putting loose leaf herbal tea in a bottle with water, and leaving it in the fridge overnight to steep. Instant chilled flavored water! It’s fun to experiment with teas, and even using fresh ingredients like strawberries and basil can keep me feeling energized. For hot teas, I make a pot and take my time making it, really enjoying every aspect. By having this gratitude for the heat, aroma, and taste, I find myself reaching for refills more often!

The Calm Holiday Journal is a mix of practical mindfulness tips and contemplation prompts, and how you use it is up to you.
