Empower yourself with the “Pride in Practice” guide for LGBTQ+ individuals by Dr. Moon

Clinical psychologist, DEI consultant, and educator, Dr. S.H. Moon presents a self-empowerment guide to help LGBTQ+ individuals build a strong and authentic self.

Self-empowerment is about finding a sense of control over your own life and making decisions that align with who you are and what is important to you. Self-empowerment isn’t about ignoring the hard things or hard emotions, but it is about making decisions that will help you prioritize your mental health and well-being.

Challenges for the LGBTQ+ community

Self-empowerment is especially important for LGBTQ+ identified people because of the way culture and society have historically viewed us and treated us in negative ways.

Research shows that LGBTQ+ individuals have a higher rate of:

  • Depression

  • Anxiety

  • And other mental health challenges

Not because of who we are, but because the laws, policies, and everyday experiences of discrimination and stigma against LGBTQ+ people increase the rate of mental health challenges.

Pride in Practice: How to build a strong and authentic self

While our community has experienced these challenges, history has shown that we are also a community of powerful people who have created social change, and created beautiful ways to celebrate, like the month of Pride!

In the “Pride in Practice” guide, I will share 3 components of self-empowerment that can help you build a strong and authentic self:

  1. Mindful Self-Compassion

  2. Connection

  3. Advocacy

I’ll describe the concepts and provide a brief practice to help you incorporate it into your daily life.
